(Received for publication ni’ovember zznd, 1962) In many insect-borne infections, the chief control measure may be an attack upon the insect at some stage of its life-cycle. Where several closely allied species seem to be involved in transmission, the laborious task of differentiating them is an indispensable preliminary; a basis of sound systematics is essential if the attack on the insect vector is to be successful. In various countries of Asia, including Malaya, several members of the widespread Anopheles hyr-canus group and of the A. umbrosus group are regarded as important vectors of malaria and filariasis.
