NOTES ON ANOPHELINE MOSQUITOES FROM MALAYA, WITH DESCRIPTIONS OF THREE NEW SPECIES”

(Received for publication ni’ovember zznd, 1962) In many insect-borne infections, the chief control measure may be an attack upon the insect at some stage of its life-cycle. Where several closely allied species seem to be involved in transmission, the laborious task of differentiating them is an indispensable preliminary; a basis of sound systematics is essential if the attack on the insect vector is to be successful. In various countries of Asia, including Malaya, several members of the widespread Anopheles hyr-canus group and of the A. umbrosus group are regarded as important vectors of malaria and filariasis. Recent work, however, suggests that some of the earlier reports may be incorrect. Not only may there have been errors in the identification of the mosquitoes, but some at least of the parasites found in them had probably come from animals, not from man. Closely allied species of mosquitoes may differ considerably in their ecology, and accuracy in identifying the mosquitoes concerned may provide useful confirmatory evidence that will help to avoid confusing human and animal parasites.
